Shop Safety Protocol

Shop Floor Safety

If you see a hazard, fix it if you can do so safely — or report it right away. Silence is not safety.

1. Purpose

Most serious shop injuries involve vehicles in motion, lifts, slips/trips, and tools. This protocol is the floor standard for Cody's Automotive.

2. Vehicle movement

  • Only licensed, authorized employees may drive or move customer vehicles.
  • You must be clocked in when driving or moving a customer vehicle (insurance coverage).
  • Check mirrors, path, and clearance before moving. No phone use while driving on the lot or in the shop.
  • Use a spotter when visibility is limited or space is tight.
  • Park in Park (or appropriate gear), parking brake set, wheels chocked when required.

3. Lifts and jacking

  • Use only equipment you are trained and authorized to operate.
  • Follow the lift manufacturer's arm placement and vehicle lift points.
  • Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack — use rated jack stands or a locked lift.
  • Keep the area under and around the vehicle clear of trip hazards while elevated.
  • Report damaged or unusual lift behavior immediately — do not use unsafe equipment.

4. Tools and equipment

  • Use the right tool for the job; do not improvise in a way that creates a hazard.
  • Inspect cords, air hoses, and guards. Tag out and report damaged tools.
  • Keep guards in place on grinders and power equipment.
  • Return tools to their place — a clean bay is a safer bay.

5. Housekeeping

  • Clean spills immediately (oil, coolant, water). Use absorbent and dispose properly.
  • Keep aisles, exits, and eye-wash access clear.
  • End of day: pick up debris, tools, and hoses; sweep your area.
  • Used parts and cores go in designated locations — not in walkways.

6. Emergencies

  • Know exit routes and locations of fire extinguishers and first aid.
  • Report injuries to your Supervisor immediately, no matter how minor they seem.
  • In a fire or major incident, evacuate as directed and call emergency services when needed.

Acknowledgment — I have read and understand this Shop Floor protocol.
