Eyes or skin exposure: flush with water, get help, and report. Do not tough it out.

1. Purpose

Shops use oils, solvents, cleaners, battery acid, refrigerants, and detail chemicals. Used correctly they do the job; used carelessly they injure eyes, skin, and lungs or create fire risk.

2. General rules

  • Read the label before use. If you do not know what a product is, do not use it until you check with a Supervisor.
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available — ask if you need hazard or first-aid information.
  • Never mix chemicals unless the manufacturer says it is safe (especially cleaners with bleach or ammonia).
  • Use only in well-ventilated areas when the label requires it.
  • No food or drink in chemical storage or active mixing/pouring areas.

3. PPE for chemicals

  • Gloves resistant to the product you are using.
  • Eye protection when pouring, spraying, or when splash is possible.
  • Face protection for high splash-risk tasks.
  • Replace gloves if they tear or become soaked through.

4. Storage and labeling

  • Keep containers closed when not in use.
  • Store chemicals upright in designated areas, away from heat sources when required.
  • Do not put chemicals in unmarked bottles or food/drink containers.
  • Return containers to proper storage after use.

5. Batteries and acids

  • Wear eye protection and gloves when handling batteries.
  • Avoid sparks and open flame near charging batteries.
  • If battery acid contacts skin or eyes, flush with water and seek first aid / medical help as needed; report to Supervisor.

6. Spills and disposal

  • Contain small spills with absorbent; dispose of used absorbent per shop procedure.
  • Large or unknown spills: secure the area, notify Supervisor, do not leave hazards unmarked.
  • Used oil, filters, solvents, and rags go in approved containers only — never down drains.
